Basics of Educational Science (EduSci)
EduSci Part 1
New learning
experiences with new topics and new team settings. This was my best teaching
exercise so far in iVET program when I have considered effectiveness of
teaching preparation and performance of conducting the real session.
At the
starting of the course, we have received an invitation from the teacher Blair
with the course blog mentioned above. This was an
interesting surprise that made me excited to know about the course well in
advance. It helped me to get to know about the teaching methods used in the
course and new team settings, assignments, and even agenda for the first
session.
Magenta is
my new team name and our team members are Marja, Timo and me. Our task for the
first EduSci was that we had to prepare to be an expert to teach key ideas of the
three theorists: Jean Piaget, Emile Durkheim and B.F. Skinner. We have managed
very effectively for making a Power Point material to cover up the three theorists’
biography, key ideas and pedagogical teaching to apply to our vocational
fields.
In the
online session held on 03.12.2013, there was some changes in agenda, so thus my
teaching time. My actual teaching went quite smoothly according to my teaching plan. Most successful
aspect of the session was that I have relaxed much more than before during the
teaching. It was because now I am more get familiar with the online way of
teachings and tools. And also our team’s material contained course structure and
contents was supported well to fit into the 35 minutes of teaching timeline.
As an individual
task, a lesson plan need to be made to demonstrate one of theorists’ idea in my
field of training. I have studied about B.F. Skinner’s Operant Conditioning as
my part of team work, so I feel like his radical behaviourism is easy to start
with.
You Tube video for Skinner’s Operant Conditioning: http://youtu.be/I_ctJqjlrHAHowever, I feel that the one theorist idea is not enough to carry out to make a holistic way of teaching, which approach is what I am aiming for. So it will be more likely to combine some other theorists’ idea in my lesson plan. Let’s see…

My lesson plan is based on Peter Jarvis experiential
learning process, which was restructured David Kolb’s learning diagram. Main
purpose of choosing this theory is to students experience the high level of
reflective learning to raise self-awareness and group consciousness.

EduSci Part 2
Current Trends in Educational Sciences
Objectives
- Students will become aware of the current issues facing the educational sciences.
- Students will develop their research skills and build a broader understanding of key concepts in use in the educational sciences.
Activities
A. Group Work
1. Each group will research and defend a position, in debate format, focusing on one of two key concepts in use in contemporary educational practice.
Be it resolved that:
All learning at the vocational education level can and should have a measurable outcome.
Outcomes of the group work is here: http://1drv.ms/1lJhFos
B. Individual Work
1. As well as completing group work as outlined above, all course participants must also complete an individual task in support of the second debate for which they are not principal debaters.

Be it resolved that:
‘Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL)’ and the use of Virtual Learning Environments suggest that learning at the vocational education level can take place completely on-line.
My position is to support LimeGreen team which means that vocational level of learning should be effective, qualitative and holistic education based on Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycles.

EduSci Part 3
Self-Assessment of Teacher Practice and
Reflections on Methodologies and Content
Objectives
Objectives
- Students will reflect
on the connections between their own practice and the key concepts covered
within the educational sciences.
- Students will develop
their self-assessment and peer-assessment skills in relation to teaching
practice.
Activities
A. Individual Video Activity
While completing the IVET program teaching practice, students will create a video of a specific lesson completed during their own practice.
Links to my completed videos: http://youtu.be/hJgFpcoQL7g
B. Peer-Assessment Activity
Once a video is accessible for viewing, all other course participants will provide a blog post comment for at least two videos. Course participants will also complete a peer-assessment form for two videos.
